Welder Qualification Testing, Start to Ticket

CWB and ASME IX qualification with coupon prep, bend testing and paperwork handled in our Edmonton lab.

Welder Qualification Testing (CWB & ASME IX)

CIC qualifies welders to CWB and ASME Section IX requirements at our Edmonton facility — test coupon welding, specimen preparation, bend and fracture testing, and the documentation that turns a passed test into a usable ticket. Because the mechanical testing happens in our own metallurgical lab, results don't wait on a third-party queue.

Qualification Standards We Test To

Structural welders qualify under the CWB system supporting CSA W47.1 fabricator certification — positions, processes and classifications matched to the work your shop is certified for. Pressure welders qualify to ASME Section IX performance requirements for B31.3 piping and Section VIII vessel work. If your client spec adds requirements on top of code, we build them into the test plan up front.

How Testing Works at CIC

•     Book positions and processes — SMAW, GMAW, FCAW, GTAW; plate or pipe; the positions your work actually requires

•     Weld the coupon under examiner supervision at our facility (or arranged on-site sessions for full crews)

•     Specimen prep and testing in our lab — visual, then bends, fractures or radiography as the standard dictates

•     Documentation issued — test records and qualification paperwork ready for your certification body and client audits

Why Shops Test With an Independent Lab

When the same company supervises the test, machines the specimens, runs the bends and signs the report, qualification stops being a logistics project. Independence matters at audit time too: your welder continuity records trace to a testing body with no stake in the outcome. And when a coupon fails, our lab can tell you why — sidewall fusion, inclusion, technique — so the retest isn't a coin flip.

Weld Procedure Qualification Too

Qualifying the welder is half the equation; the procedure they weld under is the other half. CIC's lab runs weld procedure qualification — PQR test plates through mechanical testing with the documentation to support your WPS — so new procedures and new welders can qualify in the same visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does welder qualification take?

Welding the coupon takes a session; specimen preparation and bend testing follow in our lab, with paperwork issued once results pass. Booking ahead matters more than test time — shops qualifying multiple welders should reserve booth time as a block. Call for current scheduling.

What does a welder qualification test cost?

Cost depends on process, position count, plate versus pipe, and the testing the standard requires — a single-position plate test and a 6G pipe ticket are different scopes. Send us the positions and standard and we'll quote it straight; crew bookings price better per welder.

Can you test our whole crew before a project starts?

Yes — block bookings for crew qualification ahead of a project mobilization are routine, including coordinating positions and processes against the project WPS list. Call 780-468-4593 with head count and timeline.
