Railway NDT for Track and Rolling Stock
Rail flaws, thermite welds, wheels and axles — found before they derail schedules or cars.
Railway NDT Services
Rail assets fail in known ways at known places: internal defects growing quietly in the railhead, thermite welds with imperfect fusion, wheels and axles accumulating fatigue with every mile. CIC provides railway NDT for industrial trackage and rolling stock in Western Canada — detection, sizing and condition documentation across the six scopes below.
Rail Flaw Detection (In-Track UT)
Ultrasonic testing of in-service rail finds the internal defects visual walkdowns can't: transverse defects under the running surface, bolt-hole cracks, vertical splits. For plant spurs and shortline track that big-railway detector cars don't visit, targeted UT inspection is how those defects get found before a break finds them.
Thermite & Weld Joint Inspection
Thermite welds are cast in the field, and cast in the field means variable: porosity, inclusions and lack of fusion hide inside a joint that looks fine ground flush. UT examination of thermite and flash-butt welds verifies the joint's internals — the difference between a weld record and weld assurance.
Wheel Tread & Flange Testing
Wheel failures cost cars and track together. Ultrasonic and surface examination of treads and flanges catches thermal cracking and subsurface fatigue on rolling stock wheels before spalling or worse takes the wheelset out at speed.
Axle & Hub Integrity Testing
Axles fail from fatigue at journals, wheel seats and section changes — locations UT reaches on assembled wheelsets. Periodic axle testing on industrial and heritage fleets provides the fatigue-crack screening their duty cycles quietly demand.
Phased Array Imaging
Where a conventional indication needs sizing or a critical component needs imaged records, PAUT brings the same encoded, auditable data to rail that it brings to pressure welds — full detail on our phased array page.
Condition Assessment Reports
Findings arrive as asset-by-asset condition reports — defect locations, sizes and dispositions mapped to your track chart or car list — built to support maintenance planning, regulatory conversations and insurance files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who needs railway NDT in Alberta?
Any operator of industrial trackage or rolling stock the Class 1 railways don't inspect for you: plant and terminal spurs, grain and energy loadouts, shortlines, transit shops and railcar repair facilities. If rail carries your product or your people, its defects are your problem.
